The transfer from Sofia to Rozhen monastery is 2,5 hours. After this long journey with the car, you will be surprised by the frescoes of the monastery, built during the Middle Ages. You can see how looks like the greek orthodox style in the paintings and the icons. The monastery in the past was a nunnery to the monastery Iviron in Mount Athos. It was a strategic point for the rebels in the past.
Transfer from Rozhen monastery to Melnik is less than 15 minutes. In the Middle Ages, the town had often changed his sovereignty – towards Bulgaria, to the Eastern Roman Empire. It was in the despotism of the nobleman Alexius Slav, who didn’t agree with the reign of his cousin Boril. Slav separated from the Bulgarian kingdom and for more than 20 years he controlled the area like an independent state. The fortress over the town was his residence and may he enjoyed the magnificent panorama of the rocky pyramids.
The walk to the fortress is less than 20 minutes, but it’s worthy. Later the guide will lead you to the Museum of the wine to taste more than 3 different wines from the region.
